Why More UK Businesses Are Getting Serious About Who Manages Their Digital Presence

Something shifted in the last couple of years. Businesses that used to treat digital marketing as a box-ticking exercise, something to hand off to the youngest person in the office or leave to a generalist agency charging a flat monthly retainer, are now paying a lot more attention to who’s actually doing the work and whether it’s producing anything worth paying for.

Part of that shift is economic. When margins get tighter, the first thing any sensible business owner does is look at what’s actually generating revenue and what’s just generating invoices. And for a lot of companies, their digital marketing spend was firmly in the second category.

The Problem With Cheap and Cheerful

There’s a certain type of agency that’s very good at sounding impressive in a pitch meeting. Big promises, lots of jargon, a deck full of logos from clients they’ve worked with. Then three months in, you’re getting monthly reports full of metrics that don’t obviously connect to anything your business actually cares about, like sales, leads, or revenue.

It happens constantly. And the reason it keeps happening is that digital marketing is genuinely difficult to evaluate from the outside, especially if you don’t live in that world day to day. SEO in particular is an area where it’s easy to point to traffic numbers going up without ever explaining whether the traffic is converting into anything useful. A site that gets 50,000 visits a month from people who immediately leave is not a success, whatever the report might suggest.

The businesses that tend to get burned worst are the ones that didn’t ask hard enough questions at the start. Things like: what does success actually look like for our specific goals? How do you report on commercial outcomes rather than just activity? What happens if it’s not working?

What Specialist Agencies Actually Offer

The argument for going with a specialist, rather than a generalist digital agency, is pretty straightforward. If you’ve got a significant budget and real commercial goals riding on your search performance or paid media, you want people who have spent years doing exactly that kind of work, not a team that does a bit of everything.

Cheshire-based Click Consult digital marketing services is a decent example of what that specialism looks like in practice. They’ve been operating since 2003, which is practically prehistoric in agency terms, and they focus heavily on search, both organic and paid. That kind of track record matters, not because longevity automatically equals quality, but because agencies that have been around through multiple Google algorithm shifts, multiple recessions, and the general chaos of the last few years have had to actually adapt and prove their work holds up. A lot don’t survive that.

The other thing worth understanding about specialist search agencies is that their work is, by its nature, more measurable than a lot of marketing activity. Paid search in particular produces data that’s hard to spin: you spent £X, you got Y clicks, Z of those converted. That transparency is one of the reasons businesses with sophisticated marketing teams often end up consolidating their search activity with a focused specialist rather than spreading it across a bigger generalist shop.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Sign Anything

If you’re currently reviewing your agency relationships or thinking about bringing in specialist support, there are a few things that are genuinely worth pushing on before you commit.

Ask to see case studies from businesses in your sector, or at least your rough size bracket. What worked for a national e-commerce brand doesn’t necessarily translate to a B2B professional services firm. Ask how they’d approach your specific situation and what they’d want to understand about your business before building a strategy. If the answer sounds like a template, it probably is.

Also ask about reporting. Specifically, ask what metrics they’d hold themselves accountable to, not what they track, but what they’d flag if it wasn’t moving. Agencies that are confident in their work tend to be pretty direct about this. Ones that aren’t tend to give you a longer list of things they monitor, which isn’t quite the same thing.

The broader point is that digital marketing has matured enough now that vague promises and impressively designed reports aren’t really acceptable anymore. Results are measurable. If an agency can’t show you clearly what they’ve done and what it’s produced, that’s a problem worth taking seriously before it costs you a lot of money to find out.
